On this day in history in 1835, the U.S. Government announced that the U.S. national debt was zero. Sadly, this has not happened since. As recently as 2000 forecast budget surpluses indicated the possiblity of paying off the debt in this decade. Sadly the surpluses disappeared, and the defiicit has ballooned. A budget deficit is not a given. Countries like Australia, Norway, Chile have all eliminated their deficit. Canada is running continual surpluses and may be able to eliminate their deficit.

For a surprisingly readable account of recent economic history, Alan Greenspan's recent biography is quite good.
